1,200 properties in South Africa and 1.4 million square metres supporting 32,000 staff.
The challenge to the CRES and Workplace team, was for the bank to use this space better and get more out of its portfolio; to encourage staff to work more efficiently and effectively; and to save energy.
The solution was to bring space, technology and people together; optimize space; and create flexibility and choice, thus delivering benefits to people, the business and the environment.
The challenge at that time was that the technology was not yet developed to completely support this new way of working which made the deployment difficult and people sceptical of its success.
The bank allocated cost to its businesses for space, which with business units now seeking intelligent working as a means of improving efficiency and encouraged them to look at reducing space by working differently.
Intelligent working includes flexible working patterns, improved mobility, and enhanced environments.
Improved staff attraction and retention, which was a key business imperative.
80% of people believed intelligent working had a positive effect on their work performance, while 75% felt that the new environment and facilities were better in supporting work activities than before.
The total amount of energy used in buildings fell by 6 percent and CO2 emissions, dropped by 6%.
The introduction of intelligent working has resulted in a 23% reduction in operational cost and a 22% percent cost avoidance in capital investment.
